Movies in Review: "Gods of Egypt"

I kinda love movies about Egyptian God's, which is probably the only reason I went to see this movie. That and Gerard Butler was cast in it. I haven't seen Butler in a movie I really enjoyed since Law Abiding Citizen 7yrs ago...smh. I can't say the trailer for this film really did anything for me, but I did like the theatrical poster which always caught my attention when I walked past it. I wasn't anticipating this movie, and could honestly take it or leave it, especially since it had a running time of over 2hrs. Most of which I thought would be wasted...lol.

It was ummmmmmm...Okay??? I don't know, because a part of me enjoyed it, and the other part was like "come on son". I did like that there was heavy focus on the Egyptian Deities. I enjoyed them the most, especially the costumes, and theatrics. Thoth and Zaya the Goddess of Love were my favorites. In my opinion they were the most interesting. I found the story to be humorous, but also a little too corny. It seemed like Butler was meant for a different movie because his performance seemed to be a little too strong for this film ~shrugs. As I stated early a 2+ hr running time did prove to be too much. They definitely could have shortened the running time by 30min.

I didn't hate it, but it's not worth the money for 3D, or anything else for that matter. However a $1 at Redbox won't bother you...C-

Movies in Review: "Triple 9"

Did anyone see a trailer for this movie in the theaters. I know I didn't. All I saw was the theatrical poster on the subway walls...smh. Although there wasn't heavy marketing set around this film, the poster of 4 men covered in red paint wearing masks was definitely enough to peak my interest. For those of you like myself who don't know what this movie is about, here is the trailer. Trailer looks great right!? Lol...

This movie had a lot of good and bad things going for it. One of the standouts was it's cast. This movie is filled with great actors, who unfortunately had to run with a script that did nothing with their talents. Kate Winslet that Russian accent was god awful...lol...ijs. I found it hard to believe she was head of the Russian Mafia...smh. Michael K. Williams, not a good look, not a good look at all for you sir...smh. The rest of the cast I have no complaints about, all stellar, and thank goodness for this. It was the cast's performances that made this movie worth sitting through because the story had so many holes it almost felt incomplete. Don't worry, you won't really notice it until the end when you find yourself wondering what the hell all of this was about...lol.

This movie had the potential to be great, but failed to really impress me as much as the trailer did. There are some really nice action scenes, and thrills. I definitely found myself more impressed with the cast than the movie itself though...C+

Movies in Review: "Race"

Finally!!! Jesse Owens gets his story told. When I watched the trailer the hairs on my skin stood up. I think that had a lot to do with the song in the trailer, which added such power to the film. I have been looking forward to seeing this movie for months. I also loved that they cast a "new" face to play Owens. You guys may remember Stephan James from the movie Selma. His role was small in Selma, but I was excited to see what he would do in a lead role.

Stephan James was an excellent choice. He definitely had a strong performance and did Jesse Owens justice. I just wish the story was as strong as Jame's performance. Not to say the movie was bad, it just felt a little watered down. There wasn't enough power in the film. It felt like the light and fluffy version of Jesse Owens story.~shrugs. I guess they were trying to focus on his running, but giving hints of a deeper story with his family structure. I guess they didn't want to make the film too dark, but we all know the way Jesse was treated in the country he won 4 gold Olympic medals for was much grim. So I'm kind of on the fence of joy and anger for this one.

I very much enjoyed the film. It was great to hear the audience applaud Owens in the theater. I did also feel a little anger at how watered down the movie was, but that might be just me. I hope Mr. Owens was pleased with it...B+

Movies in Review: "Eddie the Eagle"

The trailer for this film definitely had me hooked. Not that anything was exceptional about the trailer, but I love a good underdog story. It was hard not to fall in love with Eddie's perseverance. Not to mention every time I watched the interaction between Eddie and his Mum it warmed my heart and made me smile. :)

The talented star of the film, Taron Egerton, has a very bright future ahead of him. You might remember him from The Kingsman as "Eggsy". I loved this young man as Eddie. I think he did a great job of representing Eddie's real likeness. Eddie is a character himself in the film, but the enjoyment of the movie is intensified by his parents, who add a great bit of humor to the film. I enjoyed them the most. Hugh Jackman was cool, but nothing really special about his performance.~shrugs

I enjoyed this movie very much. A great feel-good movie that will have you leaving the theater smiling. I found it to be a true inspiration. Good movie to take your tween too, although they might find it corny...lol. A nice story filled with heart and humor. This makes a nice date movie or something I'd see at a matinee...B+

Movies in Review: "Deadpool"

I know everyone was looking forward to seeing Ryan Reynolds try his hand at being a "superhero". It's a good thing we already got a taste of him in Wolverine where he shined as Deadpool. As much as I enjoyed Reynolds in Wolverine, I was still a little apprehensive about this movie. This was THE most anticipated movie this weekend. All I know is I walked into this one hoping for nothing but the best.

O.M.G!!! When I tell you this movie was good...smh. The best movie I have seen in a while. They did their thing with this one. This movie was nothing I had expected. The entertainment value is turned all the way up in this movie. Everything in this movie is so out of left field, but in the best way. I loved the way this movie was filmed. The best part was the humor and how Reynold's poked fun at himself. They spared nothing at keeping Deadpool true to his character. It was really great to watch. The chemistry between the characters made the movie even better. I thought Colossus was a little annoying, but that's as far as my dislike goes. Ryan Reynolds was on one for this role...kudos to you sir.

Although a Marvel movie, please take warning to the "R" rating. This one is definitely not for the younger crowd. If you are of age, this is one you want to see. One of the most power packed, entertainment filled movies this year. I was more than pleased, you will be too...A+

Movies in Review: "How to be Single"

Oh we know how I love a good chick flick, sister/girlfriend movie, especially around Valentine's Day! I wanted to see this with my single girlfriends and make a fun evening of it. Unfortunately after tendering all of my girlfriends I realized I was the only single one left...smh. So I took my depressed single ass to this movie ALONE. Hell, if I'm gonna be alone on Valentine's Day, at least I could get a laugh out of it...right!?...lol. Too bad this movie didn't have many laughs to offer...

Maybe my expectations were a bit high for this one, but ummmmmmm...I was more bored than entertained. This movie suffered from all the funny scenes being shown in the trailer...smh. It also had a bad case of having way too much going on. It was a cute movie that felt like it was trying too hard. I wish Rebel Wilson could be funnier in movies, but she just ends up being so extra to me lately. The movie had too many side stories. However I did love the story between Leslie Mann and her boy toy. Their exchanges were the most entertaining parts in the movie. Dakota Johnson played the lead Lucy, but she didn't do the character any justice and kept getting overshadowed by Rebel in every scene they shared...eh.

Definitely not the movie I was hoping this would be. It's had tons of potential, but fell flat on most of them. I'm happy I went to see this one alone. I would have felt awful wasting anyone's time and money on this. This is a movie better watched at home...C+

Movies in Review: "Zoolander 2"

Ok so I wasn't anticipating this movie like most fans of the first movie. I didn't even see the first movie until this past week when it came on TV ~shrugs. As silly as I found the first movie to be, I admit, as stupid as this movie is, it did have humor that made it bearable to watch if I was high. I was expecting much of the same from the sequel. So I walked into the theater with little expectations. I was just seeing it just to see it ~shrugs.

You ever watch a movie that every celebrity wants to make a guest appearance in? Yeah those movies never go well. Unfortunately this Zoolander sequel had a bad case of too many damn celebrity appearances. So much so that it took away from the characters everyone really wanted to see, Mugatu. Mugatu's screen time was very limited in this movie, but Will Ferrell did his thing when he was on-screen. I also wish there was more of Kristen Wiig's character. She was kind of amazing to watch, with her outrageous orange tan, overly plumped lips, and outlandish costumes. She was quite an entertaining spectacle. I would have loved more interaction between her and Mugatu,

All I have to say is every celebrity who is a fan of a movie, does not need an invitation for an appearance. All they did was water down the story and take away camera time from the characters everyone really wanted to see...Ugh...C

Movies in Review: "Kung Fu Panda 3"

It's been 5yrs since we last saw our favorite Kung Fu Panda Po. I love me some Kung Fu Panda...and I know I'm not the only one. After the sequel, I did not expect another film. I enjoyed the first movie, and then the second one so much, that I was ok without having another and leaving this franchise on a good note. Sometimes you just have to know when to let a movie end, unlike Shrek and Ice Age...smh. However when I saw the trailer appear on the screen, I was overcome with excitement. Po!!!!!! Did I mention I loved me some Po! Lol...My calendar was set for the release of this one, although my expectations weren't very high, I was still looking forward to it.

Soooooo...Cute! Po and his crew were in rare for, with the added character additions which added a nice touch to the story. The addition of the other Panda's was a great place to take this story, and they were hilarious. My favorite Panda's were the ribbon twirling girl panda, the hugging panda, and of course the cute baby panda's. Mostly because they were so freaking cute. I enjoyed having Po's father (the duck) in the story more this time. I always find him humorous. Unfortunately because the focus was on the Panda's, we didn't see much from Po's Kung Fu fighting crew. I did kind of miss them. This made the movie a little less enjoyable for me that the first 2 because of this.

If your kid is a fan of Kung Fu Panda, I'm sure they will enjoy seeing Po at it again in this movie. It is cute and fun. I took my kid and he was trying to be the Master of Chi and complained that his powers weren't working...lol...B+

Movies in Review: "The Finest Hours"

Two of my favorite movie genres, true stories and disaster dramas. So there should be no surprise that I was looking forward to seeing this one. Not to mention the trailer drew me in with it's visually attractive disaster scenes. Oh...and I'm also a huge fan of Chris Pine...soooooo...yeah. I kinda had mid-level to high expectations for this one. Unfortunately they weren't met :(.

My first complaint is that this movie was just too damn long for what was presented in the film. There wasn't enough drama outside of the disaster scenes to really keep this movie at a good pace. I enjoyed the characters, but something was definitely lacking in the story that made it feel kind of empty. As much as I enjoyed the characters, I felt no real connection. Chris Pine was great, but some back story on him would have been nice. I'm a huge fan of Casey Affleck, but he failed me in this movie. I don't know if his character was supposed to be way, but he felt a little withdrawn, and I just wanted more from him. A little too laid back for me. Eric Bana was annoying as hell, and I don't usually feel that way about him. It would have been nice to get a little more on the men sent out on the rescue. We only got small scenes/dialogue from them, and they really deserved more. The focus was mainly on the rescue, which involved scenes that didn't have the visual power it seemed to have in the trailer.

This movie was ok, but lacked the power to really make it a winner. Besides the water scenes, the movie was a little too soft, and lacked depth. I enjoyed being introduced to this rescue story, but I do believe these men deserved better than what was brought to the big screen...C+
