Movies in Review: "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle"

Jumanji was definitely the movie I was most looking forward to this weekend, the bonus was that my 5yr old sidekick was also super interested in seeing this film. The film boasts a PG-13 rating, so I was a little worried it wasn't right for someone his age, but I also he has seen worse, so I still took my chances. The buzz around this film had me with the highest expectations, especially since the first film was so amazing, a sequel was real ambitious. With an outstanding cast, I think everyone wanted to know how the film faired with the passing of Robin Williams.~fingers crossed

What really drove this movie was definitely the cast. The action wasn't as great as I had hoped, but the entertainment value was still on 100. My kid had a ball watching this film and was laughing and jumping with excitement all over his seat. I had to tell him to calm down more than a few times (yes films excite him as much as me...lol). What I loved is the Jumanji characters played by Rock, Hart, Black and cast acted just like the people they were in the real world. That definitely upped the comedic factor. Rock and Hart are a great comedic pair, but you add in Jack Black made it even more magical. I am still laughing at some of the exchanges that were had on-screen. A very well cast film.

This movie has some great moments, and the best part is that it is laugh out loud funny. I took my 5yr old and he loved it. The audience was filled with other young viewers who also had a ball, so I'd call this family fun entertainment. I enjoyed this movie as much as I had hoped to, and I think you will too...A-

Movies in Review: "The Greatest Showman"

I seriously believe they did a great job with the marketing for this film. I was the advertising and marketing that peaked my interest for this film. I liked the trailer, but felt I could take it or leave, and wasn't pressed either way. However it surely became my 2nd movie of interest for this weekend by its release. The cast looked remarkable, but I seriously think the soundtrack also had great deal to do with my decision to see this film as well. I was hoping for great things from The Greatest Showman!

Ok...so call me stupid, but I totally missed that this film is a musical...I wasn't ready. The singing started and I remember feeling annoyed and I didn't think I would be able to sit through a musical (I have to be in the mood). I wanted to give this movie a chance, so I kept myself seated, and I'm happy I did. The movie and singing started out a bit slow, but as more and more characters were introduced the magic started to happen. The singing and choreography gave me goosebumps and chills. The costumes were beautiful, and performances were excellent. Musicals are definitely are definitely where Zac Efron shines, because he was EVERYTHING in this film. Which is an exceptional comment coming from me because I usually find him annoying...lol. Not the case in this film, he was perfect. Everyone was perfect. Can we talk about the singing again. Best film soundtrack this year ~standing ovation. The music was all that for this film...ALL THAT. "Never Enough" by Loren Allred is on repeat for me for the rest of my life...lol.

A very well cast, choreographed, and directed film. The musical performances were exceptional and made the movie everything it needed to be, pure entertainment. I very much enjoyed this film, and probably was the underrated film coming out of the weekend and shouldn't have been. Keep in mind it's a musical, if that's not your thing, but definitely well worth seeing...A-

Movies in Review: "Downsizing"

I am a HUGE Matt Damon fan, so there isn't much I wouldn't see that he's featured in, even that debacle of a film Suburbicon...smh. Unlike Suburbicon, I actually found the trailer for Downsizing to be very interesting. I thought the story seem to offer something fresh, fun and creative. The trailer was also amusing and offered a great cast. This film definitely felt like a winner that I was really looking forward to seeing. My expectations for this film were about average, and it ranked in the top 3 films I wanted to see this weekend.

Downsizing is listed as a comedy-drama, and I guess I was expecting a little more comedy ~shrugs. It had a number of comedic moments, which had a dramatic undertone feel (if that makes sense). The film was wonderfully cast, although Kristen Wiig felt a little out of place. The story also felt a little all over the place, especially at the beginning. However the story picked up when the character Ngoc Lan Tran entered. In my opinion, earlier scenes could have been edited to focus more on the story of Damon's character and the people like Tran. This was the best part of the film, and all the other stuff seemed like a waste and seemed to drag the movie down. There was definitely too much downtime at the beginning of the film. However the film did progress well, then sort of got weird again in the end.

This was a decent movie, but was filled with a lot of stuff that wasn't needed and dragged the film down. The best part of the film was Damon and Tran's story, especially Tran. I didn't think Sudeikis's story was necessary, nor the extended party scene shots of Damon’s character...meh. All in all, the meat and potatoes of the film are great. It's the unwanted appetizers that might have you overlook and miss the main dish...B-

Movies in Review: "Father Figures"

I seriously was going to have a heart attacked this holiday weekend. You guys know I am all about reviewing the latest movie releases, which usually isn't a problem. However, this weekend there were more than 5 movies released!? Omg...can you say ~dead. I guess it wouldn't have been a big problem if I also didn't have interest in seeing all of them. Out of the 5 I had lined up, I knew one would have to go, so I rolled the dice on Pitch Perfect 3, and Father Figures. As you can see Father Figures won. I hadn't been hearing anything great about PP3, and I thought the trailer for the film was just ok. However I found the trailer for Father Figures more hilarious, and figured if I wanted to see a comedy this would be the better choice.

I wish I had chosen Pitch Perfect 3...smh. Father Figures failed at trying to be too funny. The comedy was so extra that it totally missed the mark. Ed Helms and Owen Wilson weren't the best comedic match. I find Helms very funny alone or with someone more evenly matched than Owen Wilson, who I don't find funny very often. The potty jokes the men had about their mom got repetitive and old very quickly. I found myself dosing off more than laughing. The story didn't come together well, then got weirdly dramatic and depressing at the end. A little too dramatic for a comedy in my opinion.

This was definitely my least favorite movie from the bunch. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a better laugh from Pitch Perfect 3. So if you are looking for a comedy to see this holiday weekend I recommend passing on this one...D

Movies in Review: "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"

I am not a diehard Star Wars fan. As a matter of fact, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the first film from this franchise I was able to watch all the way through. These movies have the longest running times for any film franchise which is probably the reason I was never able to watch them when I was young. I just didn't have the patience to sit through a 3hr movie then ~shrugs. However I was surprised how much I enjoyed The Force Awakens, and my excitement when I watched the trailer for The Las Jedi. I thought The Force Awakens was a little corny, but still entertaining enough to have me wanting to see this latest installment. My expectations weren't high, however I did expect this film to be at least as good as the last.

I got far more than I expected from this movie. This was definitely the best Star Wars film so far. I really wish they could get a hold on the running time, but besides that, this film was a master piece. I have found that these Star Wars films can be a bit corny, and at times overloaded with characters and subplots, not the case here. This story was more focused this go round and developed beautifully. This film, in my opinion, was far less corny, but still had the humor you love about these films. Although this film wasn't as fast paced as the other films and lacked some visually riled scenes, the scenes it did have were true works of art. I loved the red salt scenes, very beautifully done. I also loved the chase through the red crystal mine and the mirror scene with Rey, which all had me going "Wow".

Most fans weren't the biggest fans of this film, but it was definitely my favorite to watch. I loved the story, I thought it was easy to follow, and wasn't full of corny lines and characters, which annoyed me about the earlier films. This installment had more balance, which I enjoyed. Again that running time could stand to be decreased, but other than that, this film is a winner...A!

Movies in Review: "Ferdinand"

The kid in me loves a good animated film. Although not all animated features appeal to me, this one definitely did, it also didn't hurt that my kid was also more than excited about this one too. What appealed to me about this film was the cute story and John Cena cast as the bull. I found the casting for this character very fitting and was more than interested to see how Cena would do (although I felt he would be great). I had little doubt my kid and I would enjoy this one.

I was quite surprised the theater had more adults filling the seats than kids. There were actually adult couples checking out the film together. I guess they were fans of the book, which the movie was based...lol. This was definitely a movie that can be enjoyed by all ages, a fun family movie. John Cena was the perfect person to voice Ferdinand, and Kate Mckinnon was voicing Lupe the goat. The movie has a number of interesting characters, but these two were definitely my favorite. The animation wasn't anything out of the box, but was still beautiful and enough to keep the audience's attention.

Unfortunately this film opened the same weekend as the latest Star Wars film, so it did not get the shine it actually deserved. This film is based on a children's book, which I never read, but I am now going to purchase for my kid's book collection (he loves books). If you are looking for a movie this coming holiday weekend to check with the family, I would recommend Ferdinand, or of course Coco...lol...B+

Movies in Review: "The Shape of Water"

Ok so I only saw the trailer for this film once, and once was enough to let me know I had no interest in seeing this film. I seriously thought the trailer was super weird. The only thing that kept me even a little bit interested in this film was that Octavia Spencer co-starred in it. However I still wasn't checking for it or its release. It wasn't until 2 of my blog supporters reached out to me about whether I had planned to write a review. I was going to pass, but then I started hearing all the buzz surrounding this film, with critical acclaim from critics and several Golden Globe nominations. Perhaps I was missing something? Needless to say, I didn't want to miss out on something great, and decided to take my chance.

Ummmmm...Wth...Not quite sure what all the critical acclaim is about. I mean this movie has great visual appeal and I also very much enjoyed Sally Hawkins performance (which does deserve and nomination), but for the rest of it...come one. You have got to be kidding me with all the buzz surrounding this flick. I felt like I was watching a love story between a human and a Mutant, except this love story was more bizarre. Clearly people were feeling the same way I did. I was in a sold out theater and by the end of the film no one was clapping. All seemed to wondering what the hell we just watched. I cannot contain myself. Best film of the year? GTFOH...to who? Felt like the time critics were raving about The Tree of Life and audiences were walking out on the film. I mean don't get me wrong, it wasn't as bad as that film, I'm just confused about all the award nominations. For the most part it was a decent film, with excellent performances, but also a little weird for my taste.

I know by my review it would see that this film was horrible, not the case at all. Not a bad movie, but if this is considered a masterpiece I will stop watching movies now. This movie was decent and fell in line with what I like about a decent movie. I honestly enjoyed the beginning of the film more than the latter, where I kept looking at the screen trying to get myself to understand what was happening...ijs. You can see it if you want, I'd be interested to know what you think...B-

Movies in Review: "The Disaster Artist"

This film was based on the story of how the cult hit "The Room" came to the big screen. I've never watched The Room, nor did I have any interest, however I did find the trailer for The Disaster Artist to be more than interesting. I'm a fan James Franco and Seth Rogen on screen together. They make hilarious and strangely entertaining films. I laughed each time I watched the trailer, so I knew I wanted to see what this film was about. I became even more interested in the film when I saw how critics were raving over it. I thought their praises would probably prove to be more than the film deserved, but I had to see for myself.

I seriously enjoyed the movie, but I can't say I was singing the same praises as critics...at first. Before seeing the film I researched The Room and read up on Tommy Wiseau, who is a very interesting man. Someone who James Franco did a phenomenal job at portraying. The story of Tommy's and Greg's friendship, and how The Room came about just seemed unreal. I wasn't laughing as hard as other audience members, but I did laugh here and there. You would seriously sit there and think the film was an exaggeration of the actual events, but it wasn't. My favorite part about the film is when they did the side by side comparison of the original film, and the one being depicted in this film. Everyone was spot on, and to see the comparison made the experience of this film so much better.

I can't say I'd ever watch The Room, as it looked pretty horrible from what I could tell in this movie, however The Disaster Artist did spark a little interest to see it. This film is seriously all around crazy, and real. A job well done by the cast with spot-on performances. I enjoyed this movie, but I don't think it's everyone's cup of tea. If you found the trailer entertaining, then I think this is a movie you will enjoy...A-

Movies in Review: "Paddington 2"

My favorite bear Paddington has made its way back to the big screen with a sequel after the success of the first film...Yay! Although not due to be released until January in the US, I was lucky to have been able to grab some pre-screening tickets for me and my little side kick. He wasn't as excited to see the movie as I was, he was more interested in Ferdinand, but I dragged him along with me anyway. I know my kid, and Paddington would definitely appeal to him ~fingers crossed...lol. The first film was amazing, and I had very little doubt the second film would be the same.

Paddington can do no wrong, and all kids should experience the joy this little bear brings. This film was just as cute, charming and entertaining as the first. The story is great and can be enjoyed by all. I love Paddington's films because there is always a great message of what kindness can bring, as well as other inspiring messages to take home with you. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by all. My little sidekick couldn't take his eyes off the screen, shed a tear, laughed, and gave it a standing ovation when the credits rolled. I left the theater feeling much of the same way, less the crying...lol.

We all need movies like these in our lives, feel good entertainment that you'd want to see over and over again. If you loved the first film, there is no doubt in my mind you will enjoy this one. If you haven't seen the first one, then I highly recommend it, especially if you have little ones...A+

Movies in Review: "Justice League"

I'm not the biggest fan of DC Comics, Batman vs Superman almost ruined any interest, but Wonder Woman definitely helped to regain any confidence I lost for their movies. I can't say I was too excited to see Justice League, especially after seeing Thor, Justice League just looked corny...right!? Also I'm haven't been on board with Ben Affleck taking over as Batman. I'm not a Batman fan anyway, but I did love Christian Bale. Wonder Woman was probably the only reason I went to check this flick out, so needless to say my expectations weren't that high, but I was willing to give it a chance.

A very valiant effort for DC Comics. I’m surprised to say that I enjoyed this movie way more than I thought I would. As I don't like giving spoilers, I unfortunately have to tip-toe around this review because my favorite parts about this movie I'm unable to mention without giving too much away :(. However I will say Ben Affleck didn't bother me as much in this film, which definitely upped my experience. I enjoyed the cast, Wonder Woman (of course) was amazing, and The Flash was cute and added a lot of humor. From what I watched in the trailer I didn't expect to like Aquaman, but Jason Momoa did his thing! Cyborg was my least favorite...eh. He just felt like the odd man out. There were some nice action scenes, as you would expect, and I was fairly entertained throughout.

I kind feel like this movie came out too close to the release of Thor, a reducing its ability to stand alone instead of being compared (which of course I did). After seeing Thor this movie doesn't compare, but when looking at it from a DC Comics movie performance, it was pretty good, and keep in mind I was unable to speak about the better parts of the film (well at least better in my opinion). I enjoyed Justice League, and I think you will too...B

Movies In Review: "Murder on the Orient Express"

What captured my attention from this trailer was the look of the film. The talented cast helped too, but I definitely found the film to be very visually appealing, especially the costumes. Not to mention I also have a thing for murder mysteries, and this film reminded me of a murder mystery board game I used to play when I was young. This was definitely a film I was looking forward to seeing. My expectations surprisingly weren't high for this one, however I was still expecting to be entertained.

I kind of loved this film, far more than critics will give it credit for. It appeased all of my senses, especially visual. It kept my attention especially since I was trying to solve the murder mystery myself. I loved the characters, especially Kenneth Branagh as detective Hercule. He was quite a fascinating character, as were the performances from the whole cast. You will be biting your nails as the mystery evolves and is solved. I enjoyed the buildup and the way it ended. I laughed throughout the film, was on the edge of my seat, and by the end on the brink of tears and shock.

This film was far better than I expected. I never read the book (which film is based), so I had nothing to go off of but what was presented on the screen, which I enjoyed. I love a mystery with surprises, twists and unexpected outcomes. Films like these I become the most involved and entertained. A beautiful film that was visually appealing and very well performed. I think you will enjoy...B+

Movies in Review: "Daddy's Home 2"

Let me first start off by letting you know that I never watched the first movie. Not that I didn't want to, because I actually did, however life got in the way and I never got a chance to see it. I wasn't expecting there to be a sequel, and figured the first must have been pretty good if a 2nd film was now hitting the big screen. I must admit I was a little apprehensive, especially after the seeing Bad Mom's 2, which had twice the mom's and half the laughs. Daddy's Home 2 seemed to have the same going for it, with twice the dad's. I enjoyed the trailer, I was just hoping the additional characters wouldn't sacrifice the comedy.

Well I have nothing much to compare this film to since I missed the first. So I'm just rating this film on what I watched. I thought this movie was ok. Luckily for them, unlike Bad Mom's, the additional characters added to the humor, so I definitely found myself laughing. However some of the comedy was so contrived, and corny at times. I think Ferrell and Wahlberg make for an interesting comedic pair, I just wish the comedy felt more natural...eh :/.

Not the worst comedy I've seen this year, but definitely nothing to go running out to see. If you catch it on cable, you will enjoy the laughs and the comfort of not wasting of that hard earned cash...C+

Movies in Review: "Thor: Ragnarok"

THOR!!! My favorite God of Thunder! I seriously have a thing for Thor. Thor has me jonesin something awful. There is nothing Thor related I wouldn't see. I have been anticipating this film since I watched the trailer teasers a few months ago. No matter how many times I've seen the trailer, I still got chills. The trailer for this film was nothing less than amazing...am I right!? It's clear everyone felt the same way because this newest film killed at the box office this weekend, and I'm not surprised. I knew I would enjoy this film, that's a given, but I seriously got way more than I had expected.

First off, the laughs were on a thousand trillion. Marvel films are known for their wit and humor, but this movie kept the laughs rolling, and I really enjoyed it. I loved the new characters that were introduced, especially Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. She murdered this role. I knew she would be great, but her performance was better than that. I liked that the made her a straight badass that held her own. Thor usually owns every scene, but the light was definitely shared in this film as everyone was on point. I loved Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster and the actress who played his bodyguard, the kept the laughs rolling. My favorite character by far was definitely Korg, the rock gladiator. Everything out his mouth had me in stitches, especially the end. I want to see this film again because it gave me the entertainment value, and laugh that I needed. Having Thor, Loki, and the Hulk go back in forth is always its own entertainment then add the rest of the cast and you've got a masterpiece worth an applause.

As much as I love ALMOST everything about this movie, I wasn't the biggest fan of Cate Blanchett. No offense...but she just looked old. I kept wanting to see a different actress like Charlize Theron, or Kate Beckinsale. I don't know, but Blanchett was definitely not doing it for me, however she wasn't enough to ruin any of the feelings I had for this film. I enjoyed the previous Thor movies very much, but this is the first one I've wanted to actually pay to see again...A+

Movies in Review: "A Bad Moms Christmas"

The original Bad Moms film was such a hilarious surprise, my anticipation of the sequel was on another level. With twice the moms in the sequel, I was definitely expecting twice the laughs and more, especially with this mom/daughter cast. The trailer was funny and I seriously felt that the movie would definitely deliver much more. Do you think I may have been a little too excited for this movie? Yeah...it's possible...lol. All I know is that I needed a laugh and counted on this movie to deliver...

Soooooo...I did laugh...well, actually chuckled. Although with twice the moms, this movie didn't pack half the laughs of the first film. The humor definitely missed the mark, and the addition of the additional moms only got in the way of the main characters. What I think made the first movie so funny was because the ladies were always getting into something together. However in the sequel the original moms hardly shared the screen together, instead mostly sharing individual screen time with their own respective mothers. A dynamic that didn't work as well...meh. The original cast didn't get to shine like they did in the first film, and brought the laugh value down for me. The additional moms didn't pack the humor I expected them to. There were way too many characters and stories happening that it was kind of a mess :/.

I know my review sounds like this movie was horrible, it wasn't, but it had nothing near the laugh value of the first film. If I were you I'd save my dough and watch this one in the comfort of your home. You will have a much better appreciation for this film if very little cash was spent to see it...C+

Movies in Review: "Jigsaw"

Has anyone been missing the Saw franchise? After 7 movies, was it really necessary to continue with this madness? I mean, I loved the 1st film, the 2nd...meh. I think I also loved the 3rd or 4th film, but seriously only about 3 out of 7 were great, the rest were just ok at best, and were definitely far reaching after a while. When you love a franchise you never want it to end. I was happy when Saw ended, and now wondering why continue it. I never watched a trailer for the film, only seeing the theatrical poster. I know John Kramer (Jigsaw) died in the final film, so how were they supposed to keep this story going? This was probably the only reason I stepped foot into the theater to see this film. That and I also figured if they were continuing the story, they might have some better torture methods than seen in the previous films. This would definitely make this new franchise worth seeing...right?

So the movie played out like it usually does, with the start of the game. As we follow the story and watch the players get tortured and killed 1 by 1, we never really find out the full story as to why they were chosen and how the game came about until the very end. This is a part of the film I actually like, when the story is pieced together at the end. However the movie failed in the torture category. There was really nothing exciting about the torture methods this time, nothing that made me cringe like in previous films. The game was just ho-hum, and started and ended that way. I don't see a reason to continue past this first film if there is nothing that really separates it from the earlier films. The fact that John Kramer is no longer around really dampers the story even more...eh.

I didn't hate the film, but it had nothing new to offer, just more unknown actors/actresses getting chopped up. I think it would help this movie if they stepped up to at least B-list actor/actresses...ijs. Also, if they don't step up their torture game I don't see this franchise lasting past the 2nd film...C

Movies in Review: "Suburbicon"

I was definitely on the fence about this movie because the trailer was off kilter, but I've found that most films directed by George Clooney are, and I've still enjoyed them. Not to mention the film starred Matt Damon, so I thought maybe the film would make more sense than the trailer did, and decided to take my chances with this film. However I was a little thrown off when I saw the rating rotten tomatoes gave it, but they have been wrong before.

This time Rotten Tomatoes rating got it right. This movie was a hot mess. To make it even worse, after watching the film, the trailer actually made more sense than the whole movie did. I did not understand what was going in on in this film, from a twin sister that steps in the place of her dead sister, to the odd racial subplot (which was powerful but didn't feel like it fit in this film), and the weird murders. Nothing about this film made sense. I was happy that the running time was normal because the slow plot and empty dialogue had me falling asleep at the beginning. The best part about the film was the kid and the relationship happening with his neighbor...ijs.

Do yourself a favor and don't get caught up with this movie. It is a waste of 2 productive hours, unless you're trying to take a nap, then this film is perfect...lol. Such a surprisingly huge disappointment...D-

Movies in Review: "The Foreigner"

Oh how I love me some Jackie Chan, and I have definitely missed seeing him on the big screen. He has definitely been working, however his last few films were voice features for more than a few animated films. I was starting to think that he was out of the martial arts action flicks, and understandably so. I mean come on...the man is 63 years old...lol. So imagine my surprise and excitement when the trailer for The Foreigner came across my screen. I couldn't wait for this film to be released. Jackie usually is more of the comedic style, but this more dramatic role had me more excited. My expectations were off the charts, and I had little doubt I would be disappointed.

I seriously loved almost everything about this movie. It was so kickass. Even at the age of 63, Jackie Chan looks like he is still in his prime. I enjoyed this dramatic role more than any of his comedic ones. He was definitely on point, and had a phenomenal supporting cast. I enjoyed the story and its pace. I wanted more character development on Chan's character, but you are given pieces of his characters background throughout the film to piece it somewhat together.

I thought the film's story had great build up. Each piece leading to the conclusion, which I enjoyed. The very end of the movie I thought needed a little work. It kind of rolled to credits on a flat note, but the conclusion of all the events in the film were very satisfactory. The action sequences were great, and without a doubt, very entertaining to watch.

Another great Jackie Chan movie for the books. You will be in awe at the way this man still moves at his age. You will be drawn into the story which will keep your interests to the very end. Not a perfect film, but still very much worth seeing...B

Movies in Review: "Marshall"

I remember when I first saw the theatrical poster for this film there was nothing that had me thinking it was about the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The reason is because Chadwick Boseman was the person on person with the word "Marshall" underneath. I seriously thought it was a movie about cops?...maybe?...lol. I didn't know, and at the time, didn't care. I would go see anything Boseman was in, except that James Brown film he starred in, which I'm still wishing I could get my money back for...lol. It wasn't until I watched the trailer did I finally get the scoop on this biographical drama, that left me a little baffled at their choice for Boseman to play this role. I'm sure most of you are/were thinking the same thing. I seriously had a hard time getting my head wrapped around seeing this film based mostly on the fact that Boseman looked nothing like Marshall. Once I calmed down, I realized this was a silly reason not to see this film. So I shook it off and headed to the theater...

Anyone who still has a problem with Boseman not looking like Marshall you aren't doing yourself any favors by not seeing this film. I admit it was hard at times to visually see Thurgood Marshall, but Boseman's performance was so great at times it felt like all I could see was Marshall. Sometimes Boseman can be a little too dramatic and extra with some emotions, but I felt he was more spot on in this film. He's a great dramatic actor, I will definitely give that. I haven't seen emotion like he gives on the screen since Denzel Washington, and Nate Parker (yes I'm a huge fan of Parker's). The story focuses on the beginning of Thurgood Marshall's career, and one case in particular. Thurgood Marshall's work for people of color is powerful and riveting and I was more than happy to experience a small piece of his story, which was very well done in my opinion. Josh Gad was a great co-star as Counsel Sam Friedman. Gad is a great comedic actor, but can also switch it up. He and Boseman worked well together and made it a very entertaining film.

I forgot how much I enjoy a good courtroom drama until I saw this film. Watching the story play out had me locked to the screen as all the pieces were being put together, and obstacles were being hurdled, all the stuff that good courtroom dramas are made of. Yes there are a million actors who favor Thurgood Marshall more physically, but I don't think many could have matched Boseman's performance...B+

Movies in Review: "The Mountain Between Us"

If it wasn't for the 2 lead actors in this film, of which I am both fans of, I probably would have passed on this film. There were a number of actors who were considered and passed for these roles and I can't say any of the others, besides maybe Michael Fassbender, would have gotten into the theater to see this film more than Elba and Winslet. Not to say that I even thought these 2 looked like they matched well together in the trailer, because I didn't think they did, but the trailer was ok enough for me to give it a chance...

I must say that it was the performances of Winslet and Elba together that pulled me through this film. They seriously looked like an odd couple, but upon seeing this film, their chemistry was magnetic. I believe they worked well together even when things were falling apart around them. The story was hugely farfetched and I felt Winslet had too many near death experiences that Elba's character should have no way been able to revive her from. Also can we talk about that miracle dog :/. There is no way survival from that crash should have been possible for him...right?! Lol...but either way he was still a joy to have in the movie, so I let them get away with that.

This was a cute survival love story with scenarios that were too unbelievable at times, but with engaging performances from Winslet and Elba, there is still some joy to be had. I found myself thinking there was no way they could survive, and hoping they did kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the film. Not a blockbuster hit, but something decent to watch while cuddled up with someone special on wintery evening...lol...C

Movies in Review: "Blade Runner 2049"

Is it bad that I went to see this film without watching the first film? To be honest, I really tried to watch the first Blade Runner, but couldn't get into it and found myself dozing more than watching. Please don't kill me, because I know there are some big fans of the first film. Although the original didn't do anything to keep my attention I still had interest in seeing this second film...why? Ummmmmm...Ryan Gosling of course...duh. I was hoping I could jump right into this film like I did the last Star Wars movie without having to see the previous films and still be able to follow what was happening...lol. I wasn't pressed to see this movie, and with a running time of 3hrs, I seriously almost passed on it. However I thought I would be missing out on something, so I decided to go.

The best part about this film was definitely the cinematography. It was one of the best creative, visually appealing films I've seen this year. Kudos in that department. The story was ok and had a really nice pace, but nothing will have you get over the fact that it will feel like you spent have the day in the theater. I thought the time I spent in there didn't bother me as much and the film was still good enough to see, but all I kept thinking about was what I could have been spending my time on more important...perhaps sleep...lol. Gosling was great, and I don't feel I was lost because I didn't see the first film...ok maybe a little. However that was because I missed a little of the introduction, which kind of got everyone caught up to speed as to where this story began.

All in all not a bad film, just not great enough in my opinion to spend 3hrs in the theater watching. However I do feel the visual effects are definitely worth seeing on the big screen. So if you have the time, it still may be worth you seeing...B+

Movies in Review: "American Made"

I am probably one of the only Tom Cruise fans left, as it seems he doesn't really pack in the theaters the way that he use to anymore. However there probably isn't a film that he stars in that I wouldn't see. I enjoy his performances, especially in action movies. They trailer for American Made was nothing riveting, it looked like something Cruise was well suited for, and still something I'd enjoy watching. What surprised me was that critics were praising this film, unlike the reception of his other previous movies. So now I was definitely expecting to see something great!

This movie and Tome Cruise were good, not great, but good enough for me. There was nothing exceptional about Cruise's performance. His personality fit well with this story, but his performance was much like what we see in other films. He is always a delight to watch and seems to shine on-screen. He always seems to get out of every situation with a big wide grin, even when he's scared, he's smiling...lol. I enjoyed the story, although I've ready it's very loosely based on what actually happened. I think the movie felt a bit longer than I think it needed, but other than that, still very entertaining. There were some great flight scenes and we found Cruise's character in some very interesting situations.

All in all, not a bad film, if you are a fan of Cruise's work. The film was a bit too long for my tastes, but that would be about my only complaint. Cruise is Cruise in this film and as he is in other films, but it worked better I guess for this story. I just don't want you thinking Cruise's performance was out of the box based on what critics have been saying...B+

Movies in Review: "Kingsman: The Golden Circle"

Eggsy's Back!!! Woooohoooo...I know I can't be the only one excited after seeing the first film. The first movie was off the chain, and I've been anticipating a sequel, although I was highly pissed that they offed Harry, played by Colin Firth, in the first film. I didn't know why they thought that was a good idea. However I guess they felt the same way because Harry appeared in the trailer for this second film...hmmmmmmm...definitely interested to see how they were able to work that magic...lol. My excitement level was on 10, and I couldn't wait to see what this next installment had to offer.

This movie started out with action from the door. The first action sequence however was so over-stylized. I kind of loved the understated and smooth action sequences in the first film. Thar first car scene was way unbelievable and kind of turned me off a bit. But no worries, it did get better...sort of. You can tell a film wants to take a movie in a different direction with future films when they pretty much kill off everyone that returned from the first...womp womp. I'm not mad at that, I just think they could have done it in a better way. So needless to say, new characters were introduced, which I loved. Whose idea was it to cast Elton John? Best idea ever, he was one of my favorites in the movie...lol.

I loved the other action sequences, although I felt the introduction to Channing Tatum's character was a little corny. Halle Berry's character didn't really shine in this film and was too understated for me. The way they brought Harry back had me giving it a side-eye, but I'm going to let them have that, it was nice to have him back.

This film definitely has some work to do for the next installment, and one of the things they need to change is the longer than needed running time for this movie. They also need to work on keeping the move and actions sequences classy, but well done. This installment didn't pack the punch of the first film, but I still left the theater entertained...B-

Movies in Review: "Battle of the Sexes"

I didn't see a trailer for Battle of the Sexes, only the theatrical poster. However this is all I needed to see to know that I was definitely interested in seeing this film. I had no idea what it was about, but being a huge fan of both these actors work, I would bet money that I would enjoy it. It was later that I found out it was loosely based on the tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs...cool. Knowing this didn't change my expectations as they were already pretty high. I was ready to see a good film, and I knew this would do the job.

I really enjoyed this movie, mostly because of the performances from all, but especially Stone and Carell. Steve Carell did his thing, and not only looked like Bobby Riggs, but it felt like he was the real deal. The same for Emma Stone. This film is loosely based on their tennis match, but a story that we all needed to see. You could tell the film embellished some things for drama, as the plot felt weak at times, but the performances outshines any holes you might feel it had. My only complaint would be that I felt like they focused too much on Billie Jean King's affair...but that's just me.

If you are a fan of Billie Jean King and her work to get equal pay for women in the sport then you will enjoy this film. A story that needs to be seen, as reform needs to be had across the board and the way women's roles are perceived still needs to change. This film may open a few eyes...A-

Movies in Review: "Ninjago"

So I've been a huge fan of this franchise since the first Lego movie was released in 2014. The original film was innovative, fun, entertaining and great to watch. All of these characteristics were carried over in the 2nd film, which focused on Batman and had its own flavor, but was still a pleasure to watch. So my excitement for this 3rd installment was on a high when I watched the trailer for Ninjago. I love me some Dave Franco, and I enjoyed the trailer enough to feel this movie would be another winner.

Imagine my disappointment when I walked out of the theater. This movie was decent, but unfortunately not a winner...eh. This movie had so much potential but was far too sappy and sad that it brought the movie down. Far less upbeat than the previous films. Even my son noticed, asking "why is this movie so boring?", wanting to see more action. I felt the same way...The humor was ok, but nothing like the first 2 films. Even the story was weaker and felt a little all over the place. I found myself dozing off on this one more than once...smh.

Ninjago could have used a kick of humor and fun. It took a more emotional route that failed it miserably. It's cute, and my kid said he enjoyed it, but I saw him staring at the screen with a blank stare far too much. Not the worst movie, but definitely the worst installment for this franchise...C-

Movies in Review: "American Assassin"

I wasn't too thrilled about the new releases this weekend. If my weekend plans hadn't fallen through I probably would have skipped out on the movies this weekend. However since my schedule opened up, I did what I had to do to keep this blog updated...lol. One this is for sure, out of the 2 major released films I was only spending my time watching 1. American Assassin won because fans, not critics, like it much more than the other major released film. I was happy with my choice as the action in the trailer looked kick ass, but my expectations for anything else I was unsure of.

I think I really wanted to like this movie, but the more I sat with it, I couldn't take how absolutely stupid it was. The storyline was weak as hell. It had not base, and therefore no structure. It fell apart at the seams. Everything about the story was unbelievable and weak. I mean don't get me wrong, the action sequences were decent, and the best part about the movie, but that's not saying much. The opening scene would have you believe you are in for something great, but it all goes downhill from there. The movie had a Jason Bourne-esq type of feel, but the feel was all it had. How is the main character able to get away with so much and out of so many situations? His character could have used better development in my opinion...eh.

Although this film wasn't one of my favorites many of you might ignore the huge holes in the story and some of the nonsense happening. There are enough gun and fight scenes to cloud a movie-goers judgement...lol. I wouldn't advise paying to see this one. There are definitely better movies out there like this, and more to be released. Save your coins and check it out on cable TV...D+

Movies in review: "It"

We all know how I feel about horror films, I'm not the biggest fan. So before I go any further, No, I didn't see the original film. Seriously? Why would I do that? Why would I ruin my childhood and hold on to a fear of clowns for no reason...smh. I probably wouldn't have seen this one either, but there has been so much hype about it, and so much talk about how great the original was, I figured I was old enough and could handle whatever this movie had to offer now. Who am I kidding...the trailer for this movie had me shook, and there was no way I was walking into that theater without support. Thank goodness I had it, or this review would not have happened...lol.

Ok...Sooooooo...I'm going to punch anyone who decides to dress up as Pennywise this Halloween...seriously. I don't want that clown anywhere near me. It is clear this movie put fear in my heart, but it also satisfied my entertainment taste buds. When I wasn't being scared to death, I was really enjoying all the other components of the film, especially the young actors that were cast. They really cast a great group of kids, who each had me cracking the hell up. I could seriously watch them all day. The story had a great story and good performance, and humor that balanced out being scared and grossed out at times...lol.

I think this movie may have scared me more than I think it would most of you, but it's still a movie worth seeing, if just for the laughs, which this movie has plenty of. I find most horror films to either be corny or just screamer flicks, but this was neither. A well rounded, good horror flick...A-

Movies in Review: "Home Again"

No one enjoys a romantic comedy more than me. I guess I'm just sappy that way. However I can't say I was too excited about seeing this one. The trailer was cute, and I love me some Reese Witherspoon, however there wasn't really anything that I saw special from the trailer. It was one of those movies that just looked ok. I think I could have gone without seeing this film if I hadn't watched "It" the night before and needed some lighthearted comedy to relieve of the fear "It" put in me...lol.

So I was right...this movie was just ok, but at least it did do its job and relinquished me from the terror from the night before. There wasn't anything really special about this film as I suspected. It had some funny moments, but also a very predictable storyline. This movie has the format of something that has been done before. I wish I could go on, but there really isn't much to say about this movie. The story has cute moments, but is predictable and lack luster at best.

This romantic comedy may hit the spot on a rainy night curled up on your couch with nothing else to do. However I wouldn't recommend paying a dime to see it. Waiting for this to come on cable TV is your best bet...D

Movies in Review: "Unlocked"

I've been having a blah movie experience these past couple of weeks and was hoping this Noomi Rapace thriller would fill me up. I watched the trailer I was definitely on board for this one, as it is well cast with a few of my favorite actors, and Rapace never disappoints in an action sequence. Critics were rating this one poorly, but I was certain they had gotten it wrong again, there was no way this movie could be that bad. I had about average expectations when I walked into the theater. I just wanted to walk out feeling better about movies again.

I was right...the movie wasn't as bad as critics made it out to be, but it wasn't great either. Many of my expectations were met, but this story just missed the mark in so many ways. The story was really kind of juvenile, and had definitely been done before. It sort of felt like I was watching a Jason Bourne-ish type of film, but with a female heroine. Rapace was great, but this movie was not up to her level. Her action sequences were everything, but the story was so weak, the A-list cast couldn't save it completely. This film had a running time under 2hrs, but still felt long and drawn out. The ending was shallow and predictable which definitely took away from what they built up to this point...meh.

This movie wasn't horrible, but I don't think it's worth any more than paying $5 for ~shrugs. The actions sequences were decent, but this film missed the mark in so many other areas. It just didn't feel like it was enough. Unfortunately I still walked out of the theater feeling a little empty and unsatisfied...C-

Movies in Review: "I Do...Until I Don't"

It's been a bit slow on the movie front the past couple of weeks. I won't be surprised if you've heard nothing about the 2 movies I am reviewing from this weekend because I heard nothing about them either. However in making my movie plans, I came across this film, as there were really no major released films dropping this weekend, or at least any that I wanted to see. After watching the trailer, I thought it looked ok, I loved the cast and I was in the mood for a comedy. I had very little expectations, except I did expect to laugh...unfortunately this wasn't the case.

Some films take a minute to get going as we are introduced to the story and characters, and I feel I gave this film it's time to develop. Unfortunately it didn't develop into much. I spent most of the movie waiting for it to get funny. Do you know how nerve racking it is to sit in a theater to watch a comedy and not laugh at all? That alone was a serious waste of my time. The movie was well cast but these actors couldn't bring any life to the stale writing. There were so many comedic opportunities that were missed in this film, and it was kind of annoying to watch. I was hoping things would get better but it also failed miserably in the end. Yes there were some things to take away when it comes to relationships, but nothing really exciting or anything that came across well. All of it was just kind of corny ~shrugs.

I was hoping to have something positive to say about this movie, but after thinking about the film for a few days, I realized I left the theater really unsatisfied with what I saw. This movie had talent and a story that never reached its potential...D

Movies in Review: "Logan Lucky"

If I can be honest, I was totally skeptical about this film. I thought the trailer was a little goofy and it starred Channing Tatum. By now you should know I have a love hate relationship with Tatum's performances. Hardly any of the roles he gets cast for, do I think he should have been cast for...including this one. To me Tatum always feels like the odd man out. Like he doesn't quite fit the character he's playing ~shrugs. Having Tatum cast in a film is enough to weaken my enthusiasm, however this film had far more going for it. The movie stayed on my radar because it was directed by Steve Soderbergh, who also directed the Ocean 11 films (which are some of my favorite films), and it also starred Daniel Craig, and other notable actors. This was about the only wide released film critics raved about this weekend. However I wasn't as optimistic, but took my chances anyway.

I am so happy I went to see this movie. It was like watching Ocean's 11 reincarnated with hillbillies and convicts...lol. You know how great that Ocean's 11 franchise was, and I've always wished that franchise would return. Well I can finally say it has. I felt a little lost at the beginning of the film, as I wasn't really sure where the story was headed. However the movie moved at a really nice pace and is filled with a number of interesting and funny characters. There are plenty of comedic moments like Ocean's 11, but with its own new flavor. I only had one complaint, and that was the scene that involved the firetruck. Where'd the uniforms go (that's all I will say about that)?

If you like the Ocean's 11 films, then you will love Logan Lucky. A fun and entertaining movie to watch. I'd like to thank this film for giving Hilary Swank a job...Heeeeeeeyyyyyy Hilary. Where have you been girl???? Logan Lucky was great and I think you need to get on board and see it because there will definitely be a sequel...A

Movies in Review: "The Hitman's Bodyguard"

It's always a yes for me for most action comedy films, especially when they star Ryan Reynold's and Samuel Jackson. Did you see the trailer for this film...lol? Every time I watched the trailer I was cracking up. So I was quite surprised when I noticed critics bashing it. I don't read critic reviews, I just look at their scores, and the scores this film received were far below what it looked like it deserved. However we all know critics aren't regular movie-goers like you and myself. In my opinion they've lost touch on what audiences really enjoy. But no worries, that's why I'm here...lol. I admit the low scores dampened my excitement but it still wasn't enough to keep me from purchasing a ticket.

Not sure why critics dumped on this film so badly, because it had all the ingredients I love in a film like this. This film didn't fall short on comedy or action. It wasn't the best film I've seen, as some scenes were a bit over the top, but it served its purpose very well and was fun an entertaining to watch throughout. The back and forth between Reynold's and Jackson is enough in itself to see this film. They were absolutely hilarious and great together. Salma Hayek was the icing on the cake...lol. The action scenes were at times a little unbelievable, but still fun to watch. There wasn't a moment where I wasn't totally engaged in this film, and that counts for something.

Not the best written film you've seen, but do you usually watch action films for the writing??? The action was great and the comedic performances were on point. I laughed out loud and this film kept my interest until the credits rolled. This is a fun and entertaining film that I think you would enjoy, be it matinee, Redbox, or a date night out...B+

Movies in Review: "Crown Heights"

Crown Heights was brought to my attention by a friend of mine. Besides the trailer I watched on you tube, there wasn't really much marketing for this film, although it did premiere and was praised at the Sundance Film Festival. It's based on the true story of Colin Warner. You guys know I have a thing for true stories, but I also have a thing for Keith Stanfield, the actor who plays Warner. I am a huge fan of Stanfield's performances, and it was great to see him in a lead role. I had to be there to support. I had no doubts he would knock this role out of the box.

As expected, Stanfield was amazing. This man really takes on a role. I don't know Colin Warner personally, but it felt like I was watching Colin Warner. Stanfield's performance was as powerful as this film was. This movie will definitely jolt some emotion for the time that was taken away from Warner and the flaws of our justice system. A very well written and directed film. The line that was the most powerful to me hearing worth say "Please don't let this be a cell" as he's opening his eyes every morning...heartbreaking.

Warner's story represents so many people unjustly locked up in America's prison system, where you are guilty unless you have enough money to pay for a lawyer to "prove" your innocence. What a messed up world we live in right? To all the innocent incarcerated people in Warner's position I pray that the system changes sooner than later. I cannot say enough about this movie. It is a story that needed to be told and definitely a film you need to see...A!

Movies in Review: "Ingrid Goes West"

Many of you probably haven't heard of this film. There wasn't much promotion for it, although it was a hit at the Sundance film festival. I've seen the theatrical poster around, but it sparked no interest in me seeing the film. It wasn't until I finally watched the trailer and my level of interest peaked. Honestly I probably would have let this movie pass me by even after seeing the trailer because I'm not the biggest fan of Elizabeth Olsen. She's not the worst actress and I do have some respect for her work, but sometimes she really misses the mark and can be too dramatic ~shrugs. However O'shea Jackson Jr. was in this flick, and I've been waiting to catch him in something since his successful performance playing his father in Straight Outta Compton. I thought he showed a great deal of talent in that film, but then again, how hard is it to play the man who raised you...lol. I had little expectations for this movie, I was just hoping to see another great performance from O'shea.

You will definitely walk out of the theater thinking how crazy social media makes people. This movie is a comedic reality check. I absolutely loved this film. So much so, I would definitely watch it more than once. The cast was excellent, even Elizabeth Olsen, who was definitely one of my favorite characters in this film. Well, to be quite honest, I enjoyed all the performances equally as much. Everyone worked off each other so well. No one stole the show, but each shined as equally in each scene. I shuddered at the social media references and laughed heartedly throughout. Kudos to O'shea, because he was spot on. I would definitely love to see him in future roles. His talent was a pleasure to watch.

This movie was right up my alley. Great story and performances that were all quirky and off the beaten path. Movies like these are always a breath of fresh air. This movie feels like more of a chick flick, but there is definitely some enjoyment to be had for my male counterparts...A-

Movies in Review: "The Dark Tower"

I had high hopes for this film, mainly because of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey cast in the lead roles. I am a huge fan of both these actors. Although the trailer didn't really give me an idea of what the film was supposed to be about, and critics panned it, I was still willing to take my chances. This was the film I was looking most forward to seeing anyway. Critics have gotten their reviews wrong before in my opinion, and I was hoping this would be the case with this film.

The film wasn't bad, but still not great either. It took a minute for the movie to really get going. A little too much talking at the beginning, I guess trying to build the story up. I felt the film focused too much on the kid and could have used a little more focus on the story development of the Gunslinger, played by Elba. McConaughey was so evil as Walter. He really fit this role well. Walter had no soul...I kind of loved and hated him at the same time...lol. It took a bit too long for any action scenes, and there was really only maybe 1 major gun scene, but I felt the movie could have used another. However the gun scene in the film was definitely off the chain...Wow. I enjoyed that action scene and felt it was well directed and executed by Elba. It was the best scene in the movie, but unfortunately one of the only scenes like it, and it came at the end...womp womp.

In my opinion the gunslinger should have had more action scenes. This would have brought up the pace and made the movie more exciting, which it lacked. The performances were great, but the story definitely needed a little work. I didn't hate this movie, but I was definitely expecting more...C+

Movies in Review: "Kidnap"

Nothing about the trailer for this film screamed box office hit. However I can't lie and not say that I was more excited to see Halle Berry back on the big screen. Not that Berry is a top rated actress for me, but there are some films where she kills the performance, and this looked like one of them. As a mother Kidnap's story definitely captured my attention. I had very little expectations for this film, but went in still hoping for the best.

Just as I thought, Halle killed this performance. She was on 100. Her emotions could be felt throughout the film, which I enjoyed. The movie had a good pace going and a short running time, and enough thrills to keep your eyes on the screen. The action scenes and Berry's performance were decent enough to keep me entertained even when the story would get corny at times. There were some parts about the story that had me rolling my eye. There's nothing that would make me believe the kidnapping scene would have went down like that. What mother would have been turned in the position Halle's character was when they were in the park??? They could have done better with that scene. The car chasing was great and had my heart racing throughout. But I'm a mother, so my emotions were all in tune with Halle...lol.

Again, not a box office hit, but still not a bad film. There is enough excitement to keep your tuned into what's happening until the end. The story line was a bit corny at times, so the film loses major points in that areas for me. Not a film I think you need to pay for, but it's worth a matinee ore Redbox rental...C+

Movies in Review: "Detroit"

I admit I am growing tired of seeing films like these. Films that tell stories of the past and are still far too relevant today. Stories of racism, and the racists acts against minorities and people of color in America, by "Americans" I often find myself angered when leaving the theater. I went to see this film because I love and wanted to support the cast. However, upon viewing and leaving the theater, something tells me I need to make this my last film like this.

Detroit is receiving critical acclaim for its direction and cast performances, and all are definitely well warranted. The film packs a punch and has major power performances from its cast. However the content just hit a sore spot with me, and I found myself rolling my eyes and sucking my teeth at what was being shown on screen. An event that took place in 1967 had me sitting there saying to myself "Shiiiiittttt, that happened to Sean, Rob and Richard (fake names) yesterday". This movie was a disheartened reminder of how the treatment of non-whites have not changed. It angered me even more sitting in a theater of mostly whites as they sat there watching the film surprised, as if they couldn't believe this happened ~rolling eyes. I wish I could stay calm and write this review properly, but I think it would be best if I step away from this keyboard now.

This film is great, and all that you would expect from a movie. It was very well written, performed and directed, and deserves all the praise critics are giving it. The content hit too close to home for me, and left me pissed and angered. Get your mind all the way right before going to see this film...fair warning...A+
